Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger 21 – KyoryuViolet Arrives

Badass old timer.

KyoryuViolet and his partner, Plezuon returns to our planet but they are attacked by the newly revived Extinctioners, Deboth Monsters who are responsible to the extinction of our planet. Who is KyoryuViolet and why is he a major threat to the Deboth Legion that his return caused them to advance their plans?

The episode started showing us why Violet is gone at the very start of the series. What I like about this scene aside that we are shown what is his job is the beautiful shots of outer space, it gives you this feeling that Violet is indeed a space hero and that Plezuon is basically a dinosaur rocket ship and the idea of a dinosaur rocket ship is seriously fascinating until now. The opening scene also confirmed the fact that Violet is not a Spirit Ranger and that he is basically using the same gear like what the modern Kyoryugers used. This adds up to the mystery of the said character, alongside with his mission in space.

Because of the attack coming from the Extinctioners, Violet ends up crashing in the ocean instead of landing safely. Before talking more about Violet's fate, let's talk about the Extinctioners. What I like about these guys is that these three are based on the things that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and the mere fact that everything they did together is a tribute to 80's Super Sentai, to be more specific, Sun Vulcan. Its fun seeing these three have their own roll call and their own finishing move, the only thing missing is their own giant robot.

Because of the team's concern on Violet's fate, the rest of the Kyoryugers handle the Extinctioners while Red will look for Violet. This then lead us to Violet's cool first fight. All I can say is that he is one capable fighter and I wish to see more of his fighting skills in later episodes. Since Violet is well, doing fine, King returns to his teammates and help them with their fight against the Extinctioners. Their counter against their ball finisher is quite hilarious, I mean, from all people, why turn Nossan into a ball? Oh yeah, it makes sense because he is the comic relief member even though he kinda sucks with his jokes.

Now that we are done with that hilarious counter, it's time to meet Violet and his crew. First is Yayoi, and by the looks of it, she is quite serious with her work and doesn't care about Ian's flirting. That or she prefers King over Ian considering how she looks at him from a distance while King is being fascinated with the development of the Gaburevolver. For her first appearance, Yayoi didn't left any good impression at me. As for her grandpa, who is simply known as the Doctor, he is quite eccentric and he is the man responsible with the creation of the Kyoryuger gear. Wait a minute, an eccentric grandpa with a cute granddaughter?! Is it me, or Doctor Ulshade is like the First Doctor from Doctor Who less the grumpiness?

Now that we know the origins of the Kyoryuger gear, the only question left aside from the fact who created Utchy's gear is the identity of KyoryuViolet. Considering that it is quite obvious on who is the man behind the mask, the episode continues to try and hide Violet's identity by delaying it. I know it's for the sake of drama and added extra coolness once Violet transforms in front of our heroes but it kinda annoys me that they need to delay it. Oh well, at least Doctor already likes King at first sight.

The Extinctioners appeared in the city, once again delaying the Doctor or Torin to reveal Violet's identity; it is time for our heroes to spring into action. Compared to their previous encounter with the Extinctioners, these guys know how to learn from their mistakes. Instead of doing the long passing the ball thing, these three just shoot three balls with their respective qualities in one strike. That is seriously one smart move. Not only they can't use their weapons thanks to the slime or ice, they are powerless without it! In short, it is time for Violet to shine!

As expected, Doctor Ulshade is KyoryuViolet and boy, his first onscreen transformation and roll call is really impressive. It's impressive in a sense that his dance is funkier compared to his teammates and his roll call is quite hammy for an old man. The only thing disappointing about it is that he has the most generic old man problem; his back hurts because he exerted too much effort while doing his roll call. I know, it's for the sake of comedy, but it kinda ruined my early impression that Violet is such a badass. Oh well, at least his roll call is manly and hammy as heck!

With Violet out of commission, guess our heroes are left with the only option to improvise their attacks. By improvise, I mean fight the Extinctioners in hand to hand combat and steal their finishing weapon. It's effective and they were able to revert their weapons back to normal... which doesn't make sense. I mean, the ones responsible for the goo and the ice are still alive! The only one who is dead is the one with the big balls of fire! The resolution for their weapon goo problem feels rushed so that the episode can proceed to the giant battle.

Since this episode also marks the debut of Plezuon, it is time for this new Voltasaur to shine as well. Plezuon's launching sequence is really great and showed us that he is indeed originally a water-based mecha before it was converted into a spaceship. Plezuon's transformation sequence into Plezu-Oh is fantastic. The background music felt like something from a space opera and the overall appearance of the mecha fits well to the space theme. As for its weapons, the rocket punch move looks cool and as for its cannon finisher, it is amazing. The countdown is a nice touch to the mecha's space theme... but it kinda gives the opponent some time to run before he will get hit by the cannon.

At the end, the day is saved, Yayoi is kinda disappointed to what his grandfather did and yes, she is happy that King is safe. As for the Deboth Legion, it seems that they have plans in regards to Plezuon's destruction. What's interesting is the execution of the plan, since they don't know the exact location of Plezuon's hideout; they decided to use one of Debo Virsun's spawns so that they can find the exact location of the base. Considering that it is clinging on Ian's boot, guess it is safe to assume that their plan is working.
