Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger 38 – Tessai and Manga

Grandpa Tessai is not happy.

Tessai's Spirit Power is still recharging but that's not this episode is all about, it is about Tessai's descendant, Shinya who happens to be Amy and Luckyuro's favorite manga author and Tessai kinda hates it. Later, a beautiful Zorima is terrorizing town!

What's great about this episode aside that it is a Tessai episode, which is something I didn't expect to happen at this point of the show, is how Tessai reacted on the fact that his descendant is a manga creator. His reaction feels like he is that disapproving traditional grandfather who thinks that every boy in the family should do manly things like boxing or sports. What made me think of it are his reactions when it comes to his descendant when he talks about rugby! Tessai corrects him in angry manner behind his back and insists that he should just pursue a rugby career after learning that he was once part of the rugby team.

That being said, how the heck Amy gets involved with Shinya and his job as an artist? Turns out that he is just using a pseudonym in writing his title and he wants Amy to pretend to him for a sick fan who is a big fan of his work. To put it simply, he doesn't want to disappoint the fan that the author of his/her favorite manga is a dude. Which lead us to Tessai hating it. Tessai's reaction kinda surprised me, at first he hated that he is a manga artist and now he accepts it except the fact that he wants someone to face the fan and not him! I agree with Tessai, I mean, what better way to make the fan happy is by having the actual creator visiting the fan and not his stand in. But there seems to be a problem, the monster of the week attacks the city!

Much to my surprise, the monster for this week is just some Zorima with a deadly make-up brush, but for a MOTW with that simple costume, s/he gave our heroes some trouble even if it's just five of them facing s/he. S/he's ability is grabbing someone's color and absorbs it. I find this kind of skill too dull, but hey, whatever works I guess and much to my surprise, it gave our heroes a lot of trouble with it and that's what matters right now. To make matters worse, s/he can give the absorbed power to his/her comrades, making them more powerful.

Back to Amy, she visited the fan and turns out that the fan is no other than Luckyuro! I guess the close-up fan mail already gave away the identity of the sick fan. The only thing that I can say about this scene is that it seems that Lucky is having doubts in destroying the world. Will s/he continue working with Deboth or not just for his/her favorite title to last long? It's a really tough choice considering that both options have their specific advantages and disadvantages.

Aside from this scene, another thing worth noting about is Tessai meeting his descendant. Their first meeting is seriously hilarious, it's hilarious because Tessai didn't go with his usual approach, but with the generic "I am the ghost of your ancestor" approach, complete with the attire and the tone. I know this scene just emphasized the fact that Tessai has a thing with goofy disguises and wigs, but it seems a bit too over the top in my opinion. His reason doing it is to tell his descendant that he should face the fan instead of Amy.

The approach worked and he ends up visiting the fan, only to end up witnessing a Deboth attack. Much to Tessai and my surprise, he rushed in to save the victim. What I like about this scene is that it showed us that he is indeed a former athlete and his motivation in making manga, to cheer people and to be more specific, cheer girls up. It's a noble cause and Tessai approves it, causing his Spirit Power to return in its full strength so that he can help the Kyoryugers and save his descendant.

Sadly, he barely has any fight scenes in this scene and same goes with the giant battle. Since it is his episode, I kinda expected that he will participate in the giant fight but nope, Torin comes in with Bragigas. The only thing worth noting about the giant battle is a new combination, the Pteraidenoh Dricera and its badass drill finisher. Apart from that, there is nothing much to say about the giant fight.

The episode ends and Tessai approves his descendant and decides that he should train him since he has potential. Now I am starting to wonder if this will happen since the episode implied that Spirit Rangers can also pass their powers to other people. As for Luckyuro, s/he starts to act good-ish evil aka act someone that is not evil but is evil. The contents of his/her fan letter is basically I want you to write more manga until you breath your last kind of thing. Oh Lucky, you can't admit the fact that you are good deep inside!

P.S. Can't believe that Torin loves Amy's shojo manga! He seriously needs to have a human disguise like Canderrilla so that he can do other things aside from reading stuff found in the Spirit Base.

Kyoryuger: KyoryuRed (Daigo) vs. KyoryuSilver (Dantetsu)?!

The latest scans for Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger has surfaced online... which revealed one big plot twist in this series. I guess the scan above already says everything you need to know.

Dantetsu, Daigo's dad transforms into KyoryuSilver, fights his son and by the looks of it, joins the Deboth Legion! What's more, Endorf returns now accompanied with some new enemy generals in the newly reformed Deboth Legion. These generals are: New Joyful Knight Kilbrero and the New Sorrowful Knight Aisurondo.

Lastly, even though Aigaron, Caderrilla, Dogold and Luckyuro are now gone in the group, Chaos still stays with the Dark Species Deboth.

UPDATE: Added the names of the two new generals. Special thanks to JEFusion for the info.

Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger 37 – Body Switching Shenanigans feat. Souji

Because of what happened in the previous episode, Souji is practicing Torin's sword style but there seems to be a problem, it's giving a lot of strain to his body. Later, three departed Deboth monsters returns and switched the Kyoryugers around! Can they fix this problem?

So it's a Souji episode and the standard body-switch episode and unlike your standard body-switch episode, all Kyoryugers are being switched around, giving the viewers a hard time on who's on whose body. Because of this kind of problem, we have the Kyoryugers voices being dubbed by the current person who is inside the Kyoryuger's body to make it less confusing. To be honest, I hated it at first because it ruined one factor that makes body-switch episodes fun to watch, the actors trying to act a different character. Granted, they did a great job in preserving the quirks and all, but we didn't witness the characters trying to sound like a different character.

Even if that is the case, this change kinda pays off later in the episode because one of the monsters started to switch them around again. It really help us viewers identify who is currently inside that Kyoryuger's body. Because our characters are switched around, the roll call scene is really fun to watch, and just seeing the background colored explosions are a different color made me giggle a bit.

I also can't help but notice that King is acting more of a field leader in this episode. I mean in most episodes, he just screams about being brave and seeing him order his teammates is one weird sight to see. Even if that's the case, it makes sense why he is doing that, he is now inside Pink's body and as implied in one scene, they will sound like the person that they are currently inside out. In short, King is trying to make himself stand out from the rest of his teammates.

Aside that this is a Souji episode and a body-switch episode, this episode also has some great monster shenanigans; having two of the most disciplined Deboth monsters train a monster created by Luckyuro is really fun to watch. I mean, the comedy already writes itself! Two strict teachers trying to reform some student whose main gimmick is making fall asleep and experience nightmares. What's great about it the return of the strict teacher Deboth Monster that I really loved from Amy's focus episode. His commentaries and his methods of discipline are always fun to watch.

So what about the Souji part of this episode? Most of Souji's part of the episode has something to do with him trying to copy Torin's sword technique. He doing it was kinda hinted in the previous episode and what's surprising about it is that he is so dedicated in perfecting it that his wrist got injured just by doing it! So yeah, that's the Souji focus in this episode, him learning Torin's move and Torin doesn't like it for reasons that this move is too dangerous for a human to master. As for the resolution of this plot, it feels really weak. I mean, it only took one chat with Utchy while he is swapped with the MOTW and that's it. Also, it didn't help that he kinda retracted his statement about why this move is dangerous to humans by personally teaching Souji the move. What the heck Torin?!

Back to the body switching shenanigans, the best part about it is when strict teacher Deboth monster switched bodies with Torin as KyoryuSilver. Like I said, him explaining KyoryuSilver's gear is seriously fun to watch. But thanks to Souji now inside King's really durable body, he destroyed the pillow that switches people around and with that, it's time for the obligatory team finisher and later, the obligatory giant battle. Nothing much to say about those two except the part where the three Deboth monsters died, I just love that they ended the day properly.

Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger 36 – The Radiant Miracle

2shiny4me

Mad Torin appears and so does an army of destroyed Deboth monsters! The only solution for this problem is to seal the hole with the power of the Gigant Cannon. Can Torin, Bragigas' power summon enough bravery to stop his evil clone and the dead monsters?

Just like the previous episode, this episode feels like two episodes rolled in one due to the tone and the fact that Mad Torin has a lot of potential to last for more than one episode. Imagine, regular Torin versus his evil clone for at least 3 episodes and will end in one epic conclusion wherein Torin transforms into KyoryuSilver for the first time. Granted it will give us 3 episodes worth of returning monsters, but at least it did build up some proper tension between Torin and his evil clone!

Back to the episode, I was at first bothered with the creation of Mad Torin; the previous episode implied that he originated from Deboth Hell. It started to make sense when we learned that thanks to Torin's observation of humans and dinosaurs, I guess his dark side was created in a really slow process as Torin's evil side slowly disappears and ends up getting transported in Deboth Hell. Since we have two Torins in one scene, it's expected that the two will have a duel and boy; all of their duels in this episode are really fun to watch. The opening duel showed us the difference of their power and the aerial duel showed us that Mad Torin is becoming stronger thanks to the freed monsters and Torin is getting weaker thanks to his Deboth blood.

As expected, he was defeated but his defeat also showed us another instance how much the Kyoryugers care for him. These guys gave him some words of encouragement that he decided to continue fighting after he was defeated by his evil counterpart. Before talking about his final fight with his clone, the main Kyoryugers in this episode basically defeated every single of those dead monsters again, except for the one who kidnapped Nossan's niece. To put it simply, it feels like the writer just let that one live till the final ground battle so that we can see our heroes fight a lot of monsters.

To be honest, these monsters kinda distract the viewers to the main focus of this episode, Torin becoming KyoryuSilver and realizing that from the very beginning, he is the epitome of bravery and he just needs to realize it. Having King made him realize it is really cool because it kinda continues the impression that the Kyoryugers are trying to cheer the guy up but to have him say it during the time they are fighting a lot of monsters is what makes this scene kinda weak. I kinda wished that it's just a solo duel between Torin and Mad Torin with no other monsters attacking. Just these two, nothing more, nothing less.

Now that Torin realized that he is the epitome of bravery, he decides that he will use bravery as his own power source to become KyoryuSilver! His first transformation is really, really cool. I mean, he freakin' used a gun as his guitar! That alone is awesome. Granted his transformation sequence barely explained what happened to his wings, but hey, he had one cool roll call, transformation music and sequence so all is forgiven. His debut fight as KyoryuSilver is really badass and his finisher, the Torinity Strazor is really cool. Guess what I am trying to say is, it's hard to describe KyoryuSilver's first fight.

Now that we have Silver in the team and Mad Torin is defeated, it is time for the giant battle! The first giant battle with Silver is really fun to watch because it is basically Torin with the rest of the team together for the first time as Kyoryugers, not as mentor with his team. What's more is that Yayoi figured out a way to shoot the Gigant Cannon without causing the destruction of Bragigas and it's just pure awesome because it's basically 10 robot dinosaurs charging some giant cannon with 13 barrels and then shooting it to the enemy! In short, this is the closest thing we have for a 10-piece Voltasaur formation and I am fine with it.

After firing the Gigant Cannon, it's power sealed the entrance to Deboth Hell but there are still some dead monsters left. With all 10 Kyoryugers together, it seems that we don't have to worry what will happen next to our heroes now that our planet is in good hands. Even if that's the case, the Deboth Legion is not yet defeated and it will take some time for this planet to receive peace from these beings.
