Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger 11 – Amy, Utchy & the Idol

Pink & Gold, quite an interesting color combination.

It is time for Candelira to once again take center stage as it is her turn to gather emotions of happiness! And thus, her plan is to disguise herself as an idol and with the help of her Debo Monster, he will remove their "love" bones, making them spineless idol fanatics! Can our heroes stop them?

The description of the episode above is just 1/4 of the entire episode as it is more on Utsusemimaru and how he tries his best to adapt in the modern world. But before talking about that, let's talk about the idol plot in this episode! It feels like social commentary about the youth today who loves idols. Some of them end up becoming spineless individuals, individuals with no proper job but manage to buy stuff for their favorite idol group. But what the heck, kids will not notice the social commentary so let's go to the fun stuff of this episode!

I just love that Candelira's voice actress, Haruka Tomatsu played her human form. If there is one thing I noticed about her performance is the obvious lip-synching in the song that she is singing. But hey, at least her dance steps are something I can see your average idol with do so her performance is quite convincing. Another thing that I like about is the song, it is a song about destruction but her fans just take it like it is nothing to worry about and even enjoyed it. So yeah, another part of the social commentary about how entertainment can sometimes brainwash the public and how it can condition the mind on some things that are bad.

The Kyoryugers arrived just in time to stop Deboss but they must first stop the rabid fans! The way they stopped them is quite smart of them. Instead of hitting them, they just use their Beast Batteries to stun them for now so that they can face the real monsters in this area. The fights are amazing as always, but the one that stole the spotlight is KyoryuGold's dynamic entrance that forced Candelira and co. to have a temporary retreat. Again, KyoryuGold is having this flashback about his former lord and starts acting cold towards the team.

Because Amy can't stand KyoryuGold, she decides to follow him, learning the truth about Utsusemimaru. Turns out his stoic, tough guy attitude is just an act. To be honest, I was disappointed with this revelation because I miss the badass Sixth Hero, to be more specific, the level of a badass Sixth Hero like the ones from the 90's. Guys who will appear just to help the team and leaves once his mission is over. That's what I expect Utsusemimaru to be. But nope, he is actually one adorkable samurai.

And thus, we learned why he started doing this tough guy act. As it turns out, it is because of what happened during the Warring States period. While they are fighting some of the Deboss monsters, Utsusemimaru's lord protected him from one of them because he is too kind when he thought that the kid is just an ordinary kid, not a Deboss monster. Before his lord dies, he tells him that being kind is his weakness and that he should discard if he has the chance. And we know what happened next, he becomes an angry man, becomes Dogold's new body and fast forward a few years and we are now here.

His extended back story is really neat and gives us an idea why he has high expectations for King. That is why he took the words of his former lord seriously. He doesn't want others to think that he is weak in the form of his kindness for his teammates. And the only one who is aware of his past aside from Torin is Amy. What I like about it is that Amy understands Utsusemimaru's dilemma and past that instead of telling him to cut the act, she encouraged him to continue on doing it. Because they are now close and that calling Utsusemimaru formally sounds wrong, Amy ends up giving him the nickname, "Utchy".

Even if I expect him to become that badass Sixth Hero that I want him to be, at least his goofiness is limited to only a few characters and I like it. Amy is the first friend Utchy made in our time and his secret keeper. Hopefully, they can expand this relationship a bit more. Also, I just realized something, is it me, or Amy is close with a lot of older Kyoryugers such as Ramirez and Utchy? But what the heck, at least Amy now has an important role in the series, as she acts like the bridge between the older Kyoryugers and the younger Kyoryugers.

Meanwhile, Nossan ends up becoming a Candelira fan! So yeah, the next day, hijinks ensue and the rest of the boys are now infatuated with Candelira, leaving Amy alone. And so, she asked Utchy's assistance in this situation. This is when we saw his modern day clothes, which kinda looks like some badass modern samurai cosplay. What's interesting is that Amy is the one who choose Utchy's clothes. To be honest, Amy's choice of clothes for Utchy is kinda... flashy. I mean, if I will just look from afar, I know right away that the one walking is some flashy cosplayer or something and not some guy who is trying his best to blend in with the modern world.

Back to Amy, we saw a lot of interesting out of suit fight scenes. First is the unicycle scene, if there is one thing I can't believe about it is that they let Amy's actress ride a unicycle. It is like they asked her if she has any special skills and pick the most interesting one, which is riding a unicycle. This leads us to one of the most creative fights I saw in modern Super Sentai series. Same goes with Amy's Kyoryu Change in this episode, Amy used the dance as part of her fight routine. It is creative and I want to see more of it in later episodes.

Everything seems to be going well that is until the Kyoryuger boys, now under Candelira's control attacked Amy. Thankfully, Utchy arrives just in time to save his benefactor. Things get interesting when the Debo Monster's bone removing attack failed on Utchy. As it turns out, aside from girls, the monster's attack doesn't work to bashful people such as Utchy. Because the boys are useless in this episode and he pull up the stoic persona, after he throw one snarky comment, it is time to fight the MOTW.

The fight in this scene is fantastic, what's more is that they explored more of Utchy's arsenal. Unlike what I thought in the previous episode that Utchy just recycled his Beast Battery that was loaded inside the Zandar Thunder, as it turns out, Utchy has six Beast Batteries! So let's do the math, one battery for transformation, three for loading the Zandar Thunder and two extra batteries. Guess it makes sense since he is the show's Sixth Hero. Because of this, I kinda pity the main five Kyoryugers because they only have five Beast Batteries.

After lending Amy one Beast Battery to finish off the MOTW with him, it is time for the giant fight! Compared to the previous giant fights in the series that is not the show's first episode or some of the mecha formation fights, the fights in this episode are flashier than the usual. It feels like the fights are at the same quality like the mecha fights in Go-Busters. It didn't help that this is the first time we saw Kyoryuzin and Pteraidenoh team-up and fight the MOTW!

At the end, the two defeated the MOTW but Utchy's comments for the boys sink into their minds. They must improve to impress this samurai. Because Amy acts like Utchy's benefactor, Utchy asked her advice if he did a good job this week. It is kinda cute that he needs someone to check his performance. But hey, that is the charm in Utchy's character, he is an ancient samurai trying his best to adapt in the modern world and in this case, he now has a text mate in the form of Amy.
