Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U Will Not Have Cinematic Cutscenes or Story Mode

Director Masahiro Sakurai revealed in an issue of Weekly Famitsu that cinematic cutscenes and story mode will not return in Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U.

The reason behind this decision is that the movie scenes that they worked hard to create are just uploaded online. He added that, "You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I've decided against having them."

Instead of having cinematic cutscenes, the new characters will have intro video sequences. As of this writing, the only new playable characters in the game are: Villager, Mega Man and Wii Fit Trainer.

Lastly, even if the game doesn't have a story mode, Sakurai assured that the 3DS version would include a feature that would "act as a separate mode from the standard versus play."
