Mobile Suit Gundam AGE Anime Review – Part 3

For those who missed it: Flit Arc | Asemu Arc

75 years since the start of the war against the Vagan forces, it is time for the third generation of the Asuno clan, Kio Asuno to continue the legacy started by his grandpa after his father, Asemu mysteriously disappeared year ago. Now that Vagan is invading Earth, it's time for Kio to step up and fight the invading forces using the Gundam AGE-3!

This is my second least favorite story arc in Gundam AGE for a lot of good reasons. First is that this arc started really strong and showed us that Kio is one competent pilot, heck, he is more than competent because he is a gifted X-Rounder and thanks to the training he received from his grandfather with a little help coming from a virtual reality console given to him when he is a kid, it feels like that he thinks of war as some game and that the Vagan forces are just enemies he needs to blow up. In short, we see one aspect of Flit's slowly degeneration from the kid we saw in the first arc.

Another reason why this arc started really strong is the crew. My problem with the second arc's crew is that they have pilots, but not competent pilots who can shoot down enemies. The only ones who are competent in that arc are Woolf, Asemu and if Flit is on board the Diva, Flit. In this case, we have an actual competent squad of Mobile Suit pilots, including a veteran from the previous arc who still didn't move on after the passing of his girlfriend. In addition to that, they have an inexperienced captain who has a lot of potential to become one great captain, but for now, she is being thought by Flit on how to become one.

So what went wrong along the way? The first eight episodes of this story arc are strong and started the build up for the final battle thanks to the introduction of the EXA-DB and the relationship between Flit and Asemu after Asemu was declared missing by the Earth Federation. I find this interesting because of Asemu's later philosophy about war, all he wants is to balance the tides of war and take a neutral stand. He doesn't want either the Federation or the Vagan to win after discovering that each side is as dirty as the other. The only time he sided with the Earth Federation is during Kio's rescue mission.

This my friends is where the show started to take a downward spiral. I love that they showed us one of the Vagan colonies, but what I don't like is that it doesn't make sense why they still stayed in Mars. Here's the thing, if they have this kind of technology to create a colony and have a couple of their officers stay in the Earth Federation colonies, why the heck they didn't formulate a plan where they slowly send Vagan refugees to those colonies so that they can save themselves from the Mars radiation? Heck, they even developed a medicine to extend their life due to the effects of the radiation and they can take cold sleep to extent their life so that they can finish their research or something!

But no, they focused on this "Project Eden", which can be basically summed up into "we Vagan will conquer Earth as our own and will revive its original beauty that mankind has destroyed", you know the usual utopia plan made by the bad guy. To put it simply, they tried to make the villains sympathetic in the last few episodes of the show. To be honest, it's not a bad thing but if the bad guy is well, Ezelcant who ordered the destruction of one colony for this sort of utopian project and his soldiers killed a lot of innocent people in the process, how can I feel sympathetic for his situation? It didn't help that they pulled the "I only have a few months to live" card during Kio's time he was captive by the Vagan and the "dead son looks like protagonist" card.

Even if that's the case, some events of the last few episodes of the story arc are really touching. Kio's meeting with Lu and her brother, Deen. Kio just wants to make Lu happy that he doesn't care if he gives Ezelcant some classified military information just to save her life only for her to die in the end. To put it simply, even though his moments with Lu are touching and cute, he basically screwed the entire Earth Federation. Oh, and Asemu rescuing his son is one cool scene, especially how it ended in space.

That Clanche man.

Now to some of the technical stuff, the Mobile Suits introduced in this arc are really amazing. AGE-3 is one good looking mecha and same goes with its alternate forms, too bad that AGE-3 Orbital is pretty much useless in this story arc. The music is still superb and that the characters introduced in this arc are really interesting and have a lot of potential to become awesome characters in the show, just give them the right moment for them to shine. Now that Kio has seen life in a Vagan colony, what will be his decision? Will he continue to fight the Vagan or stop fighting them?

"de-light" by Yua Shinkawa Short Music Video Preview

Here's a short preview of Yua Shinkawa's latest single entitled "de-light". This song is the ending theme of Shougeki Gouraigan, which she stars as the heroine named Hitomi.

Kamen Rider Gaim 01 – Transform! An Orange From the Sky?!

Young Kouta Kazuraba is a former member of a dance group called Team Gaim and is now living an ordinary life. But everything changed when his former teammate, Yuuya showed him something that will help the team. Along with Mai, they discovered the Sengoku Driver and thus begin the start of a new era.

But before talking about what happened to Kouta and Mai, let's first talk about the episode from the very beginning. The show opens with a scene that looks like a war of the Riders. There are a couple of things to note in this scene, first is that both Baron and Gaim have their own armies of Inves, next is that Gridon is siding with Baron and that Ryugen is siding with Zangetsu. If I will base it on promotional material, Ryugen is a member of Team Gaim, so why the heck he teamed up with his brother, Zangetsu? Is it because blood is thicker than water or is it something else?

Another thing worth noting is the mysterious woman that woke up. There is something mystical about her and likely be the source of this mess. In addition, the narration for this scene has something to do with fate that I might play a bigger role later in the series. As for the Rider war scene itself, it's kinda underwhelming since we only saw two parties charge in battle before the opening credits starts to roll. Speaking of which, I have this feeling that the opening sequence is one big foreshadowing of things to come in this series.

Now to the episode proper, the first thing I noticed is the fact that the series started the same way like how Kamen Rider Kuuga started. Both shows have a sort of opening prologue that will play a larger role later in the series and our heroes help a kid look for his mommy. The next part is basically more world building and I like it. I like it because it sets up the proper atmosphere for the show, that it takes place in some fictional city and not some generic Tokyo City. Heck, they even have some large tower that looks like a tree that is basically the town's landmark!

Another thing they established is that there is one mega corporation running this city and that kids love to dance and form their own crews called Beat Riders. Speaking of dancing, the songs they use are not energetic; the dance steps are not that "cool" and most importantly, the crowd sucks. Seriously, I can't get into the dance gimmick especially if the crowd sucks when it comes to cheering.

Next is the Inves Games, which is basically a Pokémon battle featuring Lock Seeds and zippers that opens a gateway from another dimension to summon these creatures called Inves. What's interesting about the battle is that the creatures themselves are kinda "digital" but at the same time, they are not digital. Not digital in a sense that it looks like they can attack humans once there is no human holding the Lock Seed. Guess this is one dangerous game then if there is no proper supervision. Thankfully, Kouta arrives just in time to save Mai and the rest of the crowd from the Inves.

After this scene, we are introduced to Yuuya, the leader of Team Gaim and that's it. That's all we know about him, aside from the fact that he has enough money to buy a Lock Seed and got offered by a Lock Seed dealer some belt that can help them win the Inves Games. We are also introduced to the leader of Team Baron, Kaito who's philosophy is basically the survival of the fittest. There is nothing much to talk about these two and hopefully, later episodes of the show will expand the personalities of these two characters.

Now to some more interesting stuff, I can't help but notice that the ad for the mega corporation running the city, Ygdrasill Corporation's ad is similar to the TV ad of Kamen Rider 555's Smart Brain Corporation less the Engrish. That being said, I think it is safe to conclude that the Ygdrasill Corporation is one shady corporation. Another thing worth noting is that Kouta still lives with his sister and still can't figure out what it means to be an adult. Based on this scene, it looks like that even though Kouta works to pay for his own bills, he doesn't know what to do with his life. In short, he is kinda restless.

But everything changed after receiving a message from Yuuya that he has something interesting to show the group. What's interesting about it is that Yuuya only invited Mai and Kouta to meet him and not the entire group. Considering that Kouta is a former of the team, it doesn't make sense why he needs to invite him if this belt has something to do to help Team Gaim win more Inves Games to raise their ranks. Things get more interesting when they discovered that Yuuya is missing and that there's a forest in a middle of the city and what connects it is some pocket dimension.

This is when they learned that the Inves that they summon came from this world and same thing goes with the Lock Seeds they use. Kouta picks up the Sengoku Driver lying around and wears and the fruits he picked earlier are now transformed into Lock Seeds. But because of some wild Inves attacking, they left the pocket dimension and Kouta figured out that he must attach the Lock Seed on the belt and thus, he transforms into an armored warrior, which according to the promotional material is named Kamen Rider Gaim because the show hasn't referred him in this name yet.

As for Kouta's first transformation into Gaim, it's seriously ridiculous that a giant orange just fell from the sky and is now stuck in your head will later fold into your armor. Granted it looks ridiculous but it's ridiculously cool. I love that the orange folds into a cool looking samurai armor and after the transformation process is done, some juices fly out, kinda like what happens if you squish a fruit. When it comes to his first fight, I love the fact that he is discovering how his weapons work rather than be an instant expert after holding the weapons.

Things become more interesting when the mysterious woman in the show's opening appeared and tells him about stuff related to choosing your own fate. To make more interesting is that Gaim thinks that she is Mai, just wearing a different costume but unlike Mai, she knows how to use the Sengoku Driver and its related weapons and just aided Gaim in battle. As for the naginata finisher, it's ridiculous, blame the fact that orange slices fly after he defeats the Inves. At the end of the day, Mai is unaware on what happened to Kouta and how he defeated the monster by transforming into Gaim.

Overall, Kamen Rider Gaim's first episode started with a bang, it then went into some world building where it becomes slow and quite a task to watch in some instances and it ended really well and left with a lot of mysteries for us viewers to think. Guess I can't wait to see what will happen in the next episode!

Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger 32 – Kyoryu no Basuke

The MOTW for this week is sports themed and likes fierce and fiery competition and thus, the Kyoryugers accepted his challenge of a basketball match! Aside from training for this match, our heroes will also use this opportunity to learn more about teamwork after they can't "Brave In" the new Victory Beast Battery.

This is the most ridiculous episode of Kyoryuger I have seen. I know, the show has its own set of ridiculous moments, but this episode is basically them going extremely over the top especially to the sports scenes and I really, really like it. But before talking about what makes this episode so awesome, let's first talk about the currently running plot about Bragigas. First is that they have more extra batteries, including 4 Bragigas Batteries that are not charging since they haven't awaken Bragigas. Next is that the plot about the Lost Stones continues in this episode.

It is during their first encounter with the MOTW that we have an idea how the Lost Stones plot gets into play in this episode. The hint we have is that Futabain just reacted, like it is telling something to our heroes, which caused them to use the said battery to create Kyoryuger clones! The scene featuring the clones is really fun to watch and it didn't help that the Kyoryuger doubles have the heights right! Gone are the days that the clone of a Super Sentai hero is not identical to the original. After being told by the MOTW that they are not playing fairly, King accepted his challenge of a basketball game.

This is when the training montage comes in and for a training montage; our heroes looked really sloppy in this. Most training montages show us how our heroes evolve from zero to hero. In this case, it's zero to zero, we didn't see them evolve while as for the bad guy training montage, we see them work as hard as they could to become stronger foot soldiers. So how did King and friends discover teamwork in this episode? It is all thanks to Utchy and him blaming his mistake when it comes to cooking. It's because of him adding more salt instead of sugar in his tamagoyaki that King discovered that maybe, they haven't discovered their other potential outside to their specialty... and he is right. The training went smoothly after this.

The next day, it is time to face the Deboth Legion in a game of basketball or so they thought. They decided to change the game in favor to their side and so, our heroes must face them in a game of futsal! This is when things become a bit goofy, since our heroes still want to play basketball and the bad guys want to play futsal, we ended up seeing a game that is basically a mix of those two game. They went a bit over the top when it comes to the moves they do, which you can easily consider a foul if they are following basketball rules. But hey, the bad guys changed the game at the last minute, so what the heck, they decided to screw the rules and play some over the top basketball complete with a literal in your face dunk by King!

While this is all happening, Dogold is busy in obtaining a Lost Stone, which can be found inside a trophy. Futabain's sudden reaction now makes sense and I just love that Torin and Yayoi figured it out and prevented Dogold from obtaining the Lost Stone. Speaking of Yayoi, it feels like the writer remembered that she is more than just the team's tech support because we saw her kick some butt in this episode. Speaking of tech support and kicking butt, our heroes finally used the new Victory Beast Battery!

The way they activate it is quite cool and as for the finisher, aside from the fact that Minityra is quite small to be considered the team cannon, the finisher itself looks surprisingly awesome. It's awesome because it is basically a bunch of flying dinosaur heads piercing the monster's body until it dies! Now that he is defeated by our heroes, it's now time for the mecha fight! What's great about this aside from Yayoi now piloting Plezu-Oh with King is that it's one of those times that we saw all 9 Voltasaurs together in the battlefield. That alone makes this mecha fight really cool.

What makes this fight cooler is its goofiness, the sports-themed fight sequences are seriously over the top, which includes Kyoryuzin carrying a baseball bat to hit whatever the MOTW pitched and the foot soldiers huddling together to form a plan. At the end, they defeated the MOTW and his team, did a badass team call at the end, obtained the Lost Stone and now there are only two stones left. Guess it all ends well for the team, less Utchy because he hasn't played a game of basketball with his team!
