Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger 05 –The Clash of Green & Black

Cavities and Green and Black.

In this episode, it's the clash of Black and Green as Souji can't take Ian's lack of seriousness in his job as a Kyoryuger! In addition to that, we meet Ramirez, a Kyoryuger whose partner, Ankydon received cavities coming from the MOTW and is now out of control!

Now that we are done with the formal introductions of our five main heroes, it is now time to see how our heroes interact with each other. With Ian around in the team, they started analyzing the functions of the other Beast Batteries and their specific functions. Seeing our heroes actually test these batteries prior to using them in battle gives this feeling that they are a new team and that they need to study their arsenal of weapons for starters. This scene also showed us that Souji is taking things a little too serious. I mean, Ian just called him Green Boy and the first thing that comes to his mind is that Ian thinks that he is a rookie?! Seriously, the kid needs to lighten up for a bit.

Now for the villains, we finally learned the purpose of the "happiness" division of the Deboss Legion. To be honest, I expected that their plots are the "ridiculously evil" kind of type, but what I didn't expect is that their job is to make humans happy! I am not sure what's the importance of happiness in reviving Master Deboss but I find it really weird that this show has villains whose job is to make humans happy. Now I am more interested in some of their monsters.

Speaking of monsters, their first monster is a guy who bakes cakes! But the biggest surprise is that after some dark aura covered his body, he starts giving humans cavities! Whoever is responsible for giving the MOTW some dark aura wrapped around him knows his ridiculously evil plots well. Because giving humans cavities is evil, it is time for our heroes to step in and much to their surprise; the two enemy commanders have no idea why their monster is giving away cavities! This made me wonder one thing, is there a bigger force that is controlling Deboss behind the scenes?

Because the monster escaped, Ian and Souji chased it while Amy and Nossan are in-charge with taking care of the victims. This is when the episode gets more interesting, Ian just lets Souji fight the MOTW on his own so that he can analyze his moves! To add up the injury, he didn't inform Souji about his plan, causing some misunderstanding between the two. I am not sure if Ian is just being a total jerk, but the way he said that Souji can handle it on his own made him sound a bit high and mighty. Thankfully, the other Kyoryugers arrived just in time to stop the MOTW.

We are then introduced to Ankydon and the team finally meeting Ramirez. Ramirez is a warrior who decides to help his fellow Kyoryugers by entrusting Ankydon's power to them. It doesn't make sense at first on why he should entrust Ankydon to newbies considering that he is a veteran Kyoryuger; thankfully, they were able to explain it later in the episode, which I will get into later. The only problem right now is that Ankydon is having a cavity problem that is why he is on the loose. We then learned that there are a total of 10 Voltasaurs who are given the right to be called heroes, which means that there's a total of 10 Kyoryugers. This means that at least 3 Kyoryugers are out there somewhere or 3 of those Voltasaurs don't have any partners.

So aside from the MOTW, they have one Voltasaur on the loose. It is one of those times that the team needs to be serious about the gravity of the situation, but instead, we have Ian and Ramirez thinking this problem a bit lightly. I see it as their coping mechanism on how they can handle this problem. But this scene also showed us bits of Ramirez's personality. He is a bit of a goofball but knows when he is needed to act like it. This scene also revealed that Torin's dream is to see a full Kyoryuger team... and it took him centuries just to have one. Wow, I wonder what happened to those years of his search for other heroes.

Ian leaves to face the MOTW alone, while as for the rest of the team, Souji finally understands why Ian is acting like that thanks to King. During their conversation, King revealed that both Ian and Ramirez are bad when it comes to expressing their thoughts to someone in a direct manner. Also, King noticed something related to Ramirez that is why Ian left early. They are both aware that Ramirez might be dead for centuries. Now it makes sense on why he needs to entrust Ankydon to other people! Maybe he can't pilot it because he is dead!

With that in my, Souji finally understands the two a bit better, as for Ian, he is out there facing the MOTW. His tactic of defeat the MOTW is really great, but the problem is that he didn't expect that the cavities of the MOTW are not that easy to break. Wow, for a teeth filled with cavities, he has one strong pair of choppers. Instead of making a dent in his teeth, he ends up becoming a victim of the MOTW's cavity scheme. Because of this, he can't fight the MOTW properly, if Souji didn't save him in the last minute, then he might be dead by now.

If there is one thing that this scene showed me is that Souji knows how to admit mistakes and that he is considerate to the feelings of other people. In the case of this other people, he understands that Ian can't say his roll call well thanks to his cavities and just tells him not to force it. The fights in this episode are great and in addition to that, we see more of those mixed and match Beast Battery related finishers. In this case, Green used Black's Parasagun battery in his Gaburicalibur to destroy the cavities of the MOTW. Doing these mixed and match finishers showed us the limitless potential of the Kyoryuger batteries. Aside from that combo, we also saw another Gaburevolver battery combo finisher in the form of the Parasagun + Zakutor battery combo, which I find really cool.

After they are done beating him in his small form, it is time for the giant battle! Much to my surprise, the giant battle in this episode didn't bore me a bit. The giant battle in this episode is starting to become a bit creative by mixing some Beast Batteries in combat. In this case, they use the Allomerus battery so that Gabutyra will shoot fire in its mouth, which looks like it is actually spitting real fire and not the CGI ones.

In addition to that, thanks to Ramirez and Torin's advice, Green and Black enter Kyoryuzin so that they can unlock the Voltasaur Pentablade! The weapon is basically a folded version of Stegochi's shield. As for how they use it, they are basically inside the cockpit slashing the Gaburicalibur so that the weapon outside will move. As for the finisher, it reminded me a bit of Five Robo's finisher in a way thanks to the planet Earth in the back of Kyoryuzin. Just like most traditional Sentai robots that uses a sword for the finishing move, I already expected that they will do those extreme close ups every time the robot makes a slash.

Now that they are done with the MOTW, it is expected that Ankydon will be back to normal, but nope, he's not. As it turns out, the one causing Ankydon's rampage is not the cavity making MOTW, but some other Debo Monster that we don't know who the heck is he. Basing it on his dark aura, he might be the cause of the MOTW's cavity related actions. With that in mind, can the Kyoryugers save Ankydon from the Debo Monster?
