JoJo's Bizarre Adventure 20 – Caesar's Lonely Youth

In this episode, we learned Caesar's past and why he is motivated to defeat the Pillar Men. In his pursuit to defeat the remaining Pillar Men, he ends up facing Wham! Who will emerge victorious at the end?

Caesar is one of my all-time favorite secondary JoJo characters and this is one of the reasons why I like Caesar aside from his dynamic with Joseph. The thing with Caesar is his pride for his family, his heritage and his flashback showed us the origins why he has this strong sense of pride about his Zeppeli heritage. But it is not always the case with Caesar, back then he hated his father but after learning the truth on why he left his family showed us how much he cared for them. He doesn't want them to be endangered with his task related to the Stone Mask.

With that in mind, Joseph gained more respect for Caesar and as for Caesar; he will face the Pillar Men. His initial encounter with Wham in this episode is fantastic. Removing Messina in the scene basically created friction between Caesar and Wham. This scene also showed us more of Wham's abilities on how he used his Wind Mode to shield his body from the sunlight. The idea of using scientific concepts in a show that is basically about punches and kicks is quite something. What comes next is one of the reasons why Caesar is one of my favorites, though he is not as brilliant as Wham when it comes to war tactics, he managed to even outsmart Wham.

Speaking of Wham, he is one of those opponents that can think quickly to put a disadvantage into his own advantage. He is someone you want to see to have a rematch with Joseph, the master trickster and someone who is as cunning as Wham. Even if Caesar clearly has a disadvantage, the way he used Wham's Wind Mode in his advantage is really cunning. Turning the Bubble Cutter into lenses to reflect sunlight is what sealed the deal when it comes to how he used Wham's Wind Mode in his advantage. Speaking of lenses, again I just love how they incorporated science concepts in battle and in this case, the use of lenses to reflect sunlight that can kill Wham at the end.

Since everything seems went according to Caesar's plan, it is time for him to deliver the final blow... only for Wham to use it in his advantage. To be honest, Caesar's plan is perfect, the only time he screwed up is when he covered the reflected sun rays and to make matters worse, Wham used it to his advantage so that he can activate his Holy Sandstorm! This is the only thing that I am disappointed with Caesar; he never got a chance to have a single kill in the entire series.

Even if that is the case, Caesar's final moments made us for what he lacked in combat. If there is one thing Caesar showed us in his final moments that is quite impressive is his undying human spirit. Even if he is badly beaten up by Wham, he continues to stand up and even manage to grab his antidote pierce before creating the final Ripple Bubble. This is one of the moments in this series that made me stand up, slowly clap my hands and made me salute. I just witnessed the death of a great warrior, granted he didn't kill at least a single Pillar Man or vampire, his undying human spirit and how he fought Wham in this episode are enough reasons to respect Caesar Zeppeli.

But what made it more impressive is that instead of popping Caesar's crimson Ripple Bubble, Wham gave it a push so that it will reach Joseph. Because of this display, I admired Wham a bit more. He is more than just a genius in battle, but he knows how to respect his fellow warriors. With that in mind, I salute you, Wham for this action and act of respect to a noble warrior who fought till the very end.

Joseph and Lisa Lisa finally learned Caesar's sad fate, but that's not all. For once, we saw Joseph mourn and mature as a person and for once, we saw the cold Lisa Lisa break into tears. Caesar's death affected our heroes that they can't think straight. But the one who is greatly affected by Caesar's death is Joseph; he is man that Caesar entrusted with his fighting spirit in the form of his bandana and the antidote piece wrap around it. The music also added the sadness of this scene as well as the lighting and the revelation on where Caesar is buried. At the end, we witnessed the death of an honorable warrior who almost defeated Wham, the Zeppelis in the other side are proud on what you have achieved. Thank you, Caesar Zeppeli, you will be missed.
